Happy 97th Birthday, Jackie!; Jackie Gleason was South Florida's best Ambassador of Goodwill just by being himself; "Melancholy Serenade" by Jackie Gleason & his concert orchestra

LittleMissLounge YouTube Channel video: Jackie Gleason - Melancholy Serenade Uploaded January 14, 2010. http://youtu.be/UOw0qDQLPn8

I'll never forget driving to Florida from Chicago in the summer of 1987, and just as I did while home in Evanston on Mutual's WCFL, flipping on Larry King's midnight radio show on Mutual somewhere north of Gainesville or so.
(I think it was 50,000-watt flamethrower WOAI-AM out of San Antoinio, my birthplace, that I listened to south of Orlando.)

By the time I got near Port Charlotte to visit my friend Robert for a few days, on my way back for a visit with my family down here, Larry broke the news to his coast-to-coast audience of news junkies, students and up-all-nighters that the sad news had just been confirmed -Jackie Gleason had died.

I was on some dark and lonely stretch of some Florida highway about 40 minutes away from where I was supposed to be, and many hours late because of bad weather driving down thru Tennessee and Georgia.
And I do mean as dark and empty as empty could be.
Twilight Zone dark.

Knowing Larry as well as I did from having watched and listened to him since I was a kid, when he was at Channel 4 and doing color commentary for the Dolphins, I knew the stories were going to start flowing, and from someone who knew them first-hand.
And then I pulled over to the side of the highway and started crying.

A man whose genius had brought me so much enjoyment since I was a kid -and been able to be an extra on his TV show in 1969 when it was still being broadcast from the Miami Beach Convention Center- and an iconic symbol of the South Florida I'd grown-up with, was gone for good.

ABC-TV 20/20 piece from 1981 on Jackie Gleason, narrated by host Hugh Downs

And I sat in that empty car along the side of the road for at least a good hour if not more, listening to Larry tell the stories he knew in that way that, of course, only Larry King could.

Most were stories and anecdotes that I'd heard before over the previous 18 years and laughed at, but whose retelling now only made me very sad, and only made more stark that an American original like him, who chose to live in South Florida, was something that would never happen again.

And then it dawned on me that if if wasn't for the bad weather that had made me late, I'd probably have been asleep by midnight on Robert's living room couch, crashed from all the driving, and would never have heard those great Jackie stories one last time by someone who knew how truly significant Jackie Gleason really was.
Bittersweet, indeed.

They're not Identified on video but you can clearly see actor/comedian Jimmy Durante and former Miami Beach and Dade County Mayor Chuck Hall in this video.

Four years later, at an American Cancer Society party fundraiser in Washington, D.C. one night at the Washington Hilton & Towers, when I found myself next to Larry because his wife and my date were talking to other people, I finally had the chance to tell him how much I appreciated not only hearing the sad news come from him, but also the wonderful stories, even the ones I'd heard him tell before because they were so deeply embedded in my memories.
We ended up talking for about 10 minutes, mostly reminiscing about Miami, local radio here in the '70's, sports and the way things had once been and now were in Miami, for better or worse.

Two views of the entertainment world of Christmas 1957: Pre-Christmas shopping and American comedy as seen thru the eyes of Jack Benny, and Ingmar Bergman's masterful 'Wild Strawberries' opens in Sweden the day after Christmas and becomes a classic from Day One

And on December 26th, 1957, Ingmar Bergman's classic film and screenplay of remembrance, "Wild Strawberries" -Smultronstรคlle- officially opened in Sweden, the same year that he had directed his first film, the classic, "The Seventh Seal."

Both are among my all-time favorite films, and in the case of Wild Strawberries, I've probably seen it -conservatively- over 20 times, mostly on Turner Classic Movies/TCM, and it's a film I always gets something new out of, and am always trying to persuade people to see for the first time.

Now THAT was funny! David Spade's recent appearance on David Letterman was a reminder of why we like him: sly, sardonic, shocking and genuinely funny

David Spade - Stand-up comedy segment and sit-down interview on CBS' Late Night with David Letterman. The real-life housekeeping story that Spade shares in his own inimitable style, had the audience and Dave curious and laughing the whole way thru. February 10, 2012. 720p.

Please note this honest Tweet of David's from Wednesday that partly answers a question I'd been pondering, too, by HIS admitting that even HE doesn't know the answer to the question he constantly gets from fans of his show:
Rules of engagement comes back thursday march 29 for 8 weeks straight. I know i know, i dont get whats going on either...
My final comment here is a simple one - Get well, Heather! We're rooting for you.

Breaking News: Mannix Marathon on Cloo until 6 am Eastern Sunday

CBS-TV - Mannix  (1969) Intro credits.
Music composed by Lalo Schifrin.

Breaking News: Mannix Marathon on Cloo until 6 a.m. Eastern Sunday, DirecTV Channel 308. Be there!

Back in the day before we all knew what CSIs and mass spectrometers were, all you needed when you were in a real tight pinch was to call your ex-Army pal from Korea out in LA named Joe Mannix.
Mannix would get us the answers we need!

Mannix wasn't just a crime-fighting gumshoe, a top-shelf detective with a keen eye for clues, beautiful women and people who got the shaft from the system, but someone who wasn't afraid a of a fight.
Joe Mannix also had a deeply ingrained sense of integrity and righting wrongs.
Remember that, integrity?

Joe Mannix for Broward Sheriff, Al Lamberti for Media Photo Ops!

Longer version of theme song.

Yes, strings, woodwinds and brass in perfect harmony!
It's why Lalo Schifrin was a genius.

If you play the extended version above now for any half-normal kid in elementary school -like one of my teachers once did at Fulford Elementary in North Miami Beach, back when the show was still on the air- I absolutely guarantee you that their eyes will light up.

Finally at the weekend when the NFL really means NOT FOR LONG; 1970's NFL intros for ABC, CBC and NBC broadcasts

1973 NBC Sports NFL broadcast theme

Yes, those were the days...
In those dark teen years of the early-to-mid Seventies, many years before consumer VCRs existed and became commonplace -and were soon taken for granted in no time by kids who grew-up thinking that you'd always been able to see something from television a second time, on your own schedule- I can recall that the Monday after the first NFL weekend of the year, my friends and I at J.F.K. Junior High in North Miami Beach spent time trying to properly identify the order of the identifiable NFL players during this quick-cutting video montage of NBC's.

And frankly, wonder whether or not ABC would be updating their intro -yet again- that night for Monday Night Football, which, in retrospect, they actually changed less than they did the 'third man' in the booth after popular Don Meredith left to pursue entertainment options in Hollywood.

1984 ad for Safeway's Super Store -They've got a sale on VCRs, only $369; I guess the savings gets passed on to you! -LOL!
http://youtu.be/T6mD2bZc9w8

The VCR format fight: VHS vs. Beta TV commercial for NEC, 1984
http://youtu.be/FnaL50cwh-Q

The three American TV network's football themes gripped my friends and I from the start, and quickly became embedded in our young brains, which perhaps best explains why when you see them again on YouTube, you're struck by the fact that not just for my friends and I, but for millions of other sports fans alive then who watched them, they still remain preferable to anything on the air now, esp on ESPN or Fox-TV.
And they say as much in the YouTube comments, too.

When my friends and I at JFK got together at lunch, P.E. or after school, and it turned out that someone hadn't been paying close attention to the fact that the first establishing shot of the NBC intro was one from the the defending NFL champion Dolphins locker room... well, you suddenly weren't such an NFL expert after all.
Yes, we did not grade our friends' NFL prowess on a Bell Curve.
It was always sink-or-swim.

How many players in the three videos I've posted can you name?
(And how many of what would now be considered illegal hits?)

To name but a few: Danny Abramowicz -fades from his gold-colored Saints pants to the gold of the NBC text- Larry Little, Larry Csonka, Joe Namath, Essex Johnson, Ken Stabler, Cliff Branch, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Tommy Casanova, Walter Payton, Craig Morton, Willie Brown...

And the player who is seen the longest in the NBC intro at the top is Dolphins All-Pro guard Bob Kuechenberg, who hits his own helmet at the end to show that he's strapped up and ready to play.

1971 ABC Monday Night Football intro for Baltimore Colts at Minnesota Vikings, with a Johnny Unitas pre-game interview  with Howard Cosell.
http://youtu.be/Kr_fa-hR3zY

For those of you too young to know or remember, the Baltimore Colts were the defending NFL champs in 1971, having won Super Bowl V nine months before in Miami, beating the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 on the last play of the game. The very talented Minnesota Vikings had lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the previous Super Bowl, which is why Howard Cosell is so clearly animated about the match-up in what was then the second year of ABC's Monday Night Football.
This is one of the best quality videos of 1970's NFL football that I've seen in years, and includes TV commercials.

Now Trending at Hallandale Beach Blog: Nobody -anywhere- is saying, "I miss seeing Katie Couric on TV"; 163rd Street Shopping Center

WTVJ-TV (Miami) video: 1984 Katie Couric report for the-then WTVJ/Channel 4 on increase in crime at South Florida shopping malls, reporting from the-then extant 163rd Street Mall in North Miami Beach,FL, which no longer exists as shown. Above, Couric is standing in the eastern-side mall parking garage next to what was once the Jordan Marsh Dept. store, near the N.E. 15th Avenue entrance to the complex.

In the background above -thru the garage and across the street- is the location of my favorite job as a teen in NMB, Record Shack, on NE 164th Street, the BEST record store in all of northeast Dade County, which I've previously mentioned in a July 9th, 2009 post, viz a viz some news re Benny Andersson of ABBA.

Now Trending at Hallandale Beach Blog: Nobody -anywhere- is saying, "I miss seeing Katie Couric on TV."
Who's going to watch her upcoming daytime talk show on ABC-TV?

I grew-up in North Miami Beach in the 1970's just four blocks from there -on N.E. 159th Street & 14th Avenue- and worked at a couple of retail shops there while in high school at NMB Senior High, including the Burdine's in the middle of the three-block long facility when it was an outdoor pedestrian complex called the 163rd Street Shopping Center, a name that many people in South Florida recall fondly.

NMB Sr. High and JFK Jr. High were just across the street from the shopping center on the north side, which made it a huge social hang-out, back before the Aventura Mall -or the City of Aventura- existed, something I mentioned a few years back on my 2007 Wikipedia entry for NMB HS and the shopping center, both of which were eventually shorn of their color and context by the Wiki editing police, who only want name, rank and serial number.
I'll post that information full of facts and anecdotes here soon, so people can benefit from my under-appreciated effort then as a griot.

Meanwhile, up in Canada, our neighbor to the north, which lends Hallandale Beach savvy former MP from Ontario Don Boudria for a few months every year...

Robin Sparkles - "Let's Go To The Mall" (full version, from CBS-TV's 'How I Met Your Mother')
http://youtu.be/GF1b1pf9DRY

Cobie Smulders, above, is easily one of the ten most attractive actresses on American TV today, even when she plays a Canadian newscaster -like Peter Jennings.
But then she's not from fashionable Westmount like my smart, savvy, chic and super-cute friend and NMB classmate Tracey was, so I know a thing or two about very attractive Canadian teenagers, in or out of the Mall.

Real Canadians Elisha Cuthbert and Kari Matchett, whom I've mentioned here before, are also on that carefully thought-out short list.
Another win for Canada, eh?

Trust me, you can spend an entire day looking at these old South Florida photos!

Latest example of the sweet justice of the Goose:Gander maxim: FL couple gets court to foreclose on Bank of America; Andy Taylor forecloses

Collier County, FL couple subject to harassment by Bank of America over nonexistent mortgage contract gets court to foreclose on Bank of America branch, complete with Sheriff Dept. deputies to enforce order.

Just the latest example of the sweet justice of the Goose:Gander maxim.

Meanwhile, below, our old friends Sheriff Andy Taylor and Deputy Barney Fife of Mayberry get their point across in another matter involving a foreclosure, in this case, for the amount of $780, on account of a missed payment of $52.50 due to Mayberry's number one hard-ass businessman, Ben Weaver, the man in town who not only has all the money in town, but as Andy dryly notes, "all the meanness, too."

Heart-breaking hard times for kids in Obama's America - Sixty Minutes: Hard times generation: homeless kids

CBS News, Sixty Minutes: Hard times generation: Homeless kids,
First aired: March 6, 2011
http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7358670n&tag=contentMain;cbsCarousel
From the Sixty Minutes website:

For some children, socializing and learning are being cruelly complicated by homelessness, as Scott Pelley reports from Florida, where school buses now stop at motels for children who've lost their homes.
Story at: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/03/03/60minutes/main20038927.shtml
-----

I originally had a lot to say about this Sixty Minutes segment from Sunday night's show but my draft of those comments was accidentally deleted this morning, and I'm exhausted, so this will have to do instead:

The emotionally-draining situation they describe -
homeless individuals or families cleaning themselves at Walmart- is one that I actually used to see over at the Arlington County govt. HQ more often than you'd think in the 1990's when I lived in Arlington.

Since I moved back to South Florida in late 2003, I've occasionally written emails to friends and posted something here about how Arlington County, even more than usual, acted like a dog chasing its tail in their own policies on the homeless.

In the view of many well-informed people I knew -plus me- the County often seemed to be focused almost entirely on appeasing well-organized groups "helping" a segment of the homeless population, not entirely from Arlington, that, to me, at times resembled nothing so much as a very pushy and indignant voting bloc of the CDU under Helmut Kohl, constantly going on about what they wanted and needed, while simultaneously, the County seemed genuinely blind to instances where some assistance could really help some Arlington County families keep it together in their own homes.

It was hard not to notice that the constantly complaining spokes in the wheel, not the truly deserving, got the grea$e.
And that was before the foreclosure epidemic hit the country.

Friends and acquaintances of mine who travel across Florida more than I do now say they see a LOT MORE families cleaning-up in Florida Turnpike rest stops in the morning than they ever remember seeing.

From high atop Mount Koppel, Ted Koppel opines in the WaPo on the dearth of -yes- serious news. Just like last year. And the year before that... And at that forum in Aspen...

Just some quick but obvious questions that come to mind that Ted Koppel has never publicly asked in the past, and so never has had to answer from the privileged vantage point of his former insider position.

Why
ABC News never got a cable TV component.
Disney's
fault? If not, whose?

Why
CBS News also didn't. Viacom's fault?
If not, whose?

If either or both had happened and they did the opposite of what Koppel
decries below in tomorrow's Washington Post, what all readers here, presumably, would want in the abstract, would enough people watch it to be profitable, or more than a niche?
Or would it just more money down a black hole?

Just wondering...

Ted Koppel: Olbermann, O'Reilly and the death of real news
By Ted Koppel
Sunday, November 14, 2010;

To witness Keith Olbermann - the most opinionated among MSNBC's left-leaning, Fox-baiting, money-generating hosts -suspended even briefly last week for making financial contributions to Democratic political candidates seemed like a whimsical, arcane holdover from a long-gone era of television journalism, when the networks considered the collection and dissemination of substantive and unbiased news to be a public trust.

Not surprisingly, The Andy Griffith Show was my favorite TV show as a small kid growing-up in mid-1960's Memphis, which was far, far away from a Mayberry existence before we left in 1968 for South Florida, three months after the MLK assassination there, and the subsequent riots and curfews, which I still remember.

The Tennessee National Guard drove their Army tanks right past our apt. complex at night on their way downtown as everyone in our neighborhood, young and old, watched quietly from the sidewalk, utterly transfixed, almost breathless, unsure of what the next day would bring.

Because I was a very precocious kid and early reader, and was easily bored with kids books, just as
Andy Griffith's hugely-popular TV show helped instill in me a certain moral compass about the right way you treat people, The Memphis Commercial Appeal was the newspaper that helped me learn to read and make sense of the wider world beyond the Mississippi River's banks.
