Today I've posted teasers for three of the ten 30-minute episodes. Each program is available on the website for only 30 days due to copyright reasons, so don't procrastinate and miss one! Once it's gone, it's gone for good.

SVT video: Three-minute teaser for the fifth episode of The Eighties on 1984, a year that saw the group Frankie Goes to Hollywood make it big but see their huge hit "Relax" banned from BBC Radio, while LA-based groups like Van Halen, Whitesnake and Mötley Crüe wre making their presence known. This episode aired last night, June 26th.

The first time that I ever bought an album with a Depeche Mode song on it was in 1982, when I purchased the soundtrack for Summer Lovers about an hour after I saw that film starring Peter Gallagher and Darryl Hannah, the very first day it was out.
I replayed it in my head as I walked thru the record store, thinking how mundane and boring everything in NMB seemed compared to that film, which showed people giving in to their unconventional side for a change.

That film, along with its title song by Michael Sembello, has always been a guilty pleasure of mine and many of my friends from IU, who wondered why in the world we didn't have the good sense to be in Greece in the summer instead of the heat and humidity of Miami, Indianapolis Kansas City and Long Island.
The film has just awesome scenery of Santorini, which is a no-brainer, of course, and a potpourri of music interludes that seemed perfectly timed, including Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough."

Trivia note: my personal high school graduation party for myself, my family and friends took place at a wonderful Greek restaurant on Lincoln Road in South Beach, following the ceremony at the nearby Miami Beach Convention Center.
I wish we'd owned a video camera back then, because that was a hell of a party, and it'd be nice to replay it every once in a while.

Looter who started the infamous Croyden fire during last August's riots, which resulted in the destruction of the iconic 144-year old, family-run Reeves furniture shop, causing damages of £3m, has been jailed for 11-and-a-half years

BBC News video - 2011 Croydon riots arson case: Trevor and Graham Reeves comment on the sentencing of Gordon Thompson and losing the town icon - 'Losing shop like a bereavement' April 11, 2012. http://youtu.be/hrZH5dAA3tg

Gordon Thompson, the looter who started the infamous Croyden fire during last early August's riots in England, which resulted in the destruction of the iconic 144-year old, family-run House of Reeves furniture shop, causing damages of £3m, has been jailed for 11-and-a-half years.
No word on whether he will be prosecuted for the two fires he started at other stores before setting a sofa afire at the House of Reeves shop in south London, which consists of a series of shops on the block.

This is the logical follow-up to my August 9th post of last year, titled, Listening to BBC's 5 live Breakfast reports LIVE from Croyden reporting on rioting aftermath; www.riotcleanup.co.uk

That post featured these two videos:

Channel 4 News (U.K.) Monday's 7 p.m. newscast: Police braced as clashes erupt across London http://bcove.me/j4tah6mb
And this was before the fires in Croyden later that night.

Croydon: on the edge of riot, http://youtu.be/crSATCwwUYk

Eight months ago I mentioned having heard for myself on-air via 5 live the mournful words of
A woman who owns a maternity boutique described seeing her life's dream literally going up in smoke, finding small hangers on nearby streets that had fallen from the clothes that were stolen. The hangers got in the way of how much they could carry out.
If you've gone back to read the that post from last year, and I strongly suggest you do, then I'm here to tell you now that my own thoughts then are the same as they are now with respect to the Labour Party's mis-guided notions that simply "communicating" with society's have-nots was the things that was missing. It wasn't.
Some people can never accept the fact that their high-minded approach, however well motivated, has failed, which the last three nights has thoroughly proven. Or recognize that some people are, in fact, criminals.

Fascinating Danny Baker interview with the always-interesting Boy George (George O'Dowd) on his life: a worldwide music star, his fall, his rebirth, and his sudden interest in singing in foreign languages, esp. Italian; Judge on "The Voice" in Italy?

Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me (1982) http://youtu.be/2nXGPZaTKik
A truly genius song, sung by someone with the pipes to deliver it on a silver platter.
After all these years, it's still impossible to hear this song somewhere and not start singing it or humming it yourself, within seconds -and notice that everyone else is doing the same.

Fascinating Danny Baker interview with the always-interesting Boy George (George O'Dowd) on his life: a worldwide music star, his fall, his rebirth, and his sudden interest in singing in foreign languages, esp. Italian; Judge on "The Voice" in Italy?

Audio of BBC Radio, 5 live, The Danny Baker Show: March 31, 2012.

This audio is available on the BBC website until Friday night GMT, the 6th of April.
You can also do the pop-out via http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b01f51ly

The segment with Boy George in this two-hour audio is from 1:04:01-1:29:40, with a short three-minute news break between the two segments

Owing to some things that I needed to work on editing, I was up early Saturday morning and rather than have ESPN's SportsCenter drone on in the background and be lulled to sleep by the fourth time I heard the same baseball spring training story, word-for-word, I turned the Tv off and flipped my computer on to BBC Radio 5 live for a jolt, and the Danny Baker Show more than delivered

Danny's weekly show, which airs from 9-11 a.m. GMT, is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting things airing in the English-speaking world, as his knack for dropping great trivia and pithy anecdotes on you spontaneously regarding almost any subject -and which give you some real context, is something I really appreciate.

Plus, Danny was great when reporting LIVE for 5 live from South Africa for the 2010 World Cup, with lots of fascinating stories, before and after matches that made the whole experience for me infinitely better than if I'd only relied on what I saw and heard on ESPN.

That was especially the case once England lost and lost in such humiliating fashion, since it seemed like there were seemingly hours and hours of angry, spot-on criticism coming from callers all over the world, but especially in the U.K., about what the English National Team and their administrators needed to do to be more competitive in future World Cups.
Chiefly, NOT appear to be standing in place while teams like Spain or Germany toyed with them, out-running them, out-finessing them and out-coaching them.

I originally recorded this interview on my camcorder by placing it in between my two computer speakers, but unfortunately, my rechargeable batteries died after I fell asleep, which makes this being online a good thing for everyone involved, esp. yours truly.

Boy George Trivia:
The first big concert he ever attended was David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust tour.
He likes raw food, hemp milk and tweets lots of photos of what he likes to eat.
He talks here about why he chooses NOT to be a TV music talent show judge in the U.K., discusses his life as a kid at school -reveals he isn't allowed back to visit- how prison taught him to love hard pillows

One of the more interesting things that George says, and this is certainly good news for fans, is that he says he's "more focused than [he's] ever been before in his life," but admits that he now is willing to admit that he has some regrets, unlike he felt years ago.
George candidly admits, "Moderation is not something I do well."

According to George, the new Culture Club album will be out in 2013, and his new solo album with foreign songs will be out later this year, when he will likely be appearing on the Italian TV version of "The Voice" -IF he learns enough Italian by November.

For more information about the Mark Ronson project at the Opera House he discusses, see

Danny Baker Show homepage: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00mjjxr

For the show, Danny uses an email address that includes the name "Lord Reith."
This is a reference to the first General Manager of the BBC, whose personal problems and behavior could best be described as hypocritical and odious according to this 2007 Daily Mail article

March 2012 Downton Abbey/Hugh Bonneville odds & ends; but definitely NOT Middlemarch or Middle-Brow if you know what I mean

FilmClub UK video: FilmClub member Sally interviews with actor Hugh Bonneville about his acting career and influences. http://youtu.be/j4VhH9Kx248

March 2012 Downton Abbey/Hugh Bonneville odds & ends; but definitely NOT Middlemarch or Middlebrow if you know what I mean
Around 725 GMT Monday morning, I heard Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville on BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast -with Rachel Burden and Phil Williams- and heard the fictional Earl of Grantham share some thoughts about the popularity of the series in the U.S. and talk about Shirley MacLaine's role in the upcoming Season Three as Lady Cora's mother, and shooting a long dinner scene with clever verbal wordplay between her and his TV Mother, the the Dowager Countess, Maggie Smith, with Hugh in the middle of the table watching the banter go back and forth.

And the thing is, having not only watched the series from the beginning and watched every episode 2-3 times, and having carefully followed what goes on behind-the-scenes, I COULD
actually picture that in my head, complete with some traditional SM facial moves we've seen a time or two over the years.
I just love this series!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b01dy1s2/

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01dy1s2/5_live_Breakfast_26_03_2012/

The segment starts at 2:22:43, so move the indicator to that spot unless you want to hear the beginning of the three-hour audio clip just for the sake of hearing it. It ends at 2:27:31
It's available for listening to on the BBC website until 9:02AM GMT Mon, 2 Apr 2012

Hugh Bonneville's interview follows a very heart-breaking segment on British govt. funding on dementia, and a woman with a dramatically difficult life raising her teenage son at home while also taking care of a husband with dementia -who's only 53/54- and who is NOT able to care for himself.
Just a reminder that no matter how hard your own life may seem to you, there's always someone with much-heavier burdens and responsibilities than you.

Bonneville is in a comedy series called Twenty Twelve about the Olympic deliverance "team" behind the London 2012 Olympics that premieres on BBC 2 on Friday at 10 p.m.
Here's a recent video interview on it:

The future of the "24" film; Kiefer Sutherland interview on BBC Radio 1's Chris Moyles Show re "24," the "24" Movie, and his new Fox-TV series, "Touch."

BBC video: BBC Radio 1's Chris Moyles Show. March 2012.
The future of the "24" film; Kiefer Sutherland interview on BBC Radio 1's Chris Moyles Show re "24," the "24" Movie, and his new Fox-TV series, "TOUCH."
This is a bit of a follow-up to my last post about Kiefer Sutherland and his wonderful new Fox-TV drama, "TOUCH," which I wrote about here right before the Super Bowl, on January 28th, 2012 titled, Kiefer Sutherland talks about his remarkable new hit Fox-TV drama, "TOUCH," and reminisces about "Stand By Me" and how much he still misses River Phoenix
http://hallandalebeachblog.blogspot.com/2012/01/kiefer-sutherland-talks-about-his.html

TOUCH World Premiere is on Monday March 19th at 9 p.m. Eastern. When it was given a sneak preview in January, the first episode won its time-slot.

Amongst my friends and I, especially the ones still up in the Washington, D.C. area, Kiefer Sutherland remains one of the most compelling actors on the scene today, and those cynics who doubt that a sufficient number of movie goers would plunk down $10 to see a film version of 24 in a theater, esp. when considering the raft of plain awful comedies, shallow dramas and insipid rom-coms with Jennifer Anniston already coming out of Hollywood, is clearly not aware of the depth of support he, the show and its creators continue to have.

Around 2:24 p.m. Tuesday my time in Miami, Sharon Waxman, founder of TheWrap, your inside look at "Entertainment Industry Analysis, Breaking Hollywood News," had an exclusive about the looming financial problems facing the 24 film on her own blog, WaxWord, and it was a post that like to send a shiver down the back of every 24 fan who has already been waiting patiently for what seems like forever for this long-promised venture to finally be made.

Kiefer Sutherland Furious as Fox Pulls Plug on '24' Movie (Exclusive)
By Sharon Waxman
Published: March 14, 2012 @ 11:06 am
Kiefer Sutherland is furious at 20th Century Fox, which has called a halt to the movie version of his hit television show, “24,” over budget and star salary issues, TheWrap has learned.
The movie based on the conspiracy-terrorism-action show was in pre-production and set to start shooting next month, but has now ground to a halt because Fox will greenlight a budget no higher than $30 million, while Sutherland and producer Brian Grazer feel the budget needs to be in the low $40s at its tightest.

BBC Radio's 5 live is there LIVE covering riots: Downtown Manchester is under siege -and the gangs are running the police ragged

A family affair...
Entire families are showing-up at Manchester City Centre stores being looted with their cars -and children.
And the kids are helping Mom and Pop to loot!

I've been listening since 10 a.m. Eastern in utter amazement as the situation escalates.

An MP for Manchester has stated on the air that the police knew where the most likely hot spots would be, so why weren't they pre-positioned?
Instead, the largest gangs are engaging in hit-and-run tactics, and hours later, they seem to have the advantage over the timid police, who are vastly out-numbered.

One thing is abundantly clear in listening to eyewitnesses for hours: there are thousands of people looting, not hundreds.
And more cries are being raised for the British military to get involved since the timid police tactics so far are proving completely worthless.

Croydon: on the edge of riot

Listening to BBC's 5 live reports LIVE from Croyden on rioting by thugs and the devastation they have wrought, while Police did nothing but mill about

Tuesday August 9th, 2011
2:30-4:20 a.m.

Below, some things I've learned while listening to BBC's 5 live reports from Croyden in South London as one successful shop -owner after another describes rioting by gangs of teens and the devastation they have wrought, destroying small shops that in some cases have been there for 40-50 years, as well as Ye Olde Dominos Pizza..

One business destroyed has been there for 140 years -made it thru WWII, but destroyed by people in their own neighborhood.
It's located on a street that's named for the business...

Nearby is a safe in the middle of the street.

A woman who owns a maternity boutique described seeing her life's dream literally going up in smoke, finding small hangers on nearby streets that had fallen from the clothes that were stolen.
The hangers got in the way of how much they could carry out.

Guess we'll finally see what all those CCTV cameras can do, since there is clear shots of what took place and who was doing it .

I also think we will be hearing lots of talk about future reprisals against the guilty.

Many business owners think that the military needs to get involved and wonder how 13-year olds are out on the street at 1 am without their parents knowing?
And ask why there were no water cannons or rubber bullets?

Lots of people interviewed there -and listeners at home- texting in to the Breakfast show are taking the Police to task and criticizing the Police establishment for their failure to adapt to changes -social media, Internet, cell phones- and to stop acting like it's fifty years ago and the problem is just juvenile delinquints out on a lark.

Lots of criticism of The Met following an outmoded Police model of civil cooperation that is simply fantasy-land.
Business owners and BBC listeners are saying over-and-over that the criminal element isn't interested in cooperation or "working with the community" but the Police establishment will be slow to change their tactics and strategy.

Theresa May, the Home Secretary, is being interviewed now and wants to say that it's "sheer criminality" -and she has said it 6-7 times- but she is avoiding answering the host's question about whether or not these are, in fact, race riots, since most of those involved are poor Blacks/Carribean and in many cases, it's Asian-owned shops that are the ones that seem to be targeted for destruction.
Many think that while there's an element of wanton opportunistic destruction, there's definitely an ethnic angle, too.

It's also been mentioned that the European press is already saying that the riots show the failure of multiculturism.

All the affected areas in London are ones with the highest concentration of gangs.

The past Labour government's notions of empowering social workers to reach out to the community is a completely failed policy in the view of the majority of the people I've heard today.
One such woman calling for more of that now is getting withering criticism on the radio from others and is actually blaming the necessary govt. cuts for the troubles.

Some people can never accept the fact that their high-minded approach, however well motivated, has failed, which the last three nights has thoroughly proven
Or recognize that some people are, in fact, criminals.

The UK-Netherlands "friendly" at Wembley Thursday night is now in the hands of the Metropolitan Police, not the FA, with a decision expected later today before Dutch team flies out from Amsterdam.

Kudos to Breakfast co-host Rachel Burden for walking thru Croyden while doing her report and keeping it together while seeing such signs of devastation.
It made me think of ABC News' Diane Sawyer and her well-known ability to do the same, regardless of circumstances, at world and national hot-spots, which is why she does that so often -and so well.

Begging Me -First song from Florrie's new six-track EP out two weeks from today, June 14th

Florrie - Begging Me (2011)

Some of you who come to the blog fairly regularly -and esp. those of you who have a highly-tuned pop sensibility that more closely mirrors my own than your friends' or that of the town you live in- have already dropped me an email or two (or ten) asking why I've been so slow to post this first song video from the second Florrie Arnold EP -six-tracks!- which drops two weeks from today, June 14th, when it's been on so many other websites already.
Good question.

Mostly, it's because I wanted to wait 'till this weekend since my intuition has always been that the original release date announced, in late May, would not prove practical for one reason or another.
I guessed right, too, since the news about the release date change came a week ago today in a post by Florrie herself at her website, ending
There will be more news coming over the next few days as it gets closer to the new deadline :) Sorry that you guys have to wait a bit longer, but I promise it'll be worth it!

Since I last posted on her back on March 5th, 2011 in a post titled, Say hello to Florrie - She's musically ship-shape in Bristol fashion, always equipped with a beat & melody -and has a voice & face you won't forget, I've come across her very useful BBC artist page, which has links to all of her various appearances on the myriad channels of the BBC mother-ship, national and local.

Earlier this month Florrie was the cover subject of the Sunday Times Style supplement and someone, perhaps one of the perceptive management consultants she uses, even was smart enough to see the wisdom and humor of snapping a photo of her reading the magazine with just one eye peering above the magazine.

Check out that March post of mine out and then check the following for more info on this amazing dynamo:
Florrie's official website, where you listen to her introductory EP, with FREE downloads:
Florrie's official YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/florriemusic

And we'll now end this post with her song from last year that still pops into my head every week at the strangest of times. Where was this song when I was at IU and could've used it?

Gorgeous Geordie Cheryl Cole, "Our Cheryl" to fans, is just "a Brit Hard to Understand"; Rod Stewart might even say she's a "Little Miss Understood"

Meet Cheryl Cole -- she's British, 27, and Simon Cowell, who has handpicked her to be one of his fellow judges on the "X Factor" this fall, reckons she could be the next big British star to break America. There's just one problem -- will anyone be able to understand her?

Our glee over Ashley Cole's split from his wife Cheryl had more to do with our feelings than theirs, says Jemima Lewis
By Jemima Lewis 6:36PM GMT 27 Feb 2010

Just as no amount of air-freshener can obliterate the smell of a cab-driver's armpits, there was no disguising the horrid whiff of glee that accompanied the news last week of Cheryl Cole's separation from her faithless husband. Partly, it was just old-fashioned schadenfreude. The implausibly rich and vulgar Coles – with their OK! wedding, National Lottery adverts (right) and occasional brushes with the law (in 2003, lest we forget, Cheryl was convicted of assaulting a lavatory attendant in a Guildford nightclub) – are not the sort of couple that we Brits instinctively root for.
