The Sรถderberg sisters come to the rescue of our Summer boredom! "First Aid Kit" performs 'Emmylou' LIVE at 2013 Glastonbury Festival (HD); Dancing Barefoot; Paul Krugman finally "gets" @FirstAidKitBand and promptly falls for them -hard!

More heavenly harmonies from Sweden's Klara and Johanna Sรถderberg.

I've waited a few days in posting this because there were so many legal problems associated with the BBC's telecast of this performance that the videos were being pulled and yanked off of YouTube almost as quickly as they were being uploaded.
Frankly, I didn't want to have to play a game of 'Musical Chairs' again -get it- and constantly need to be double-checking this post and replacing one embed code for another as various versions get yanked like falling dominoes.

Me, I prefer that when I place a video here on the blog -unless it's something from SVT or TV4.se that tells you upfront that it'll only be available for viewing for a finite period of time- that the video stays put and doesn't migrate somewhere.

Klara and Johanna even posted a non-BBC version via their twitter feed and it got pulled down, too. In fact, here's that tweet from Monday:

But patience pays off for you the faithful blog reader, even though you didn't know what was going on behind the scenes, as blog YouTube fave 2Shaymcn, ace Abba and Swedish and British music lover and chronicler, one of the first people I ever subscribed to when I got my YouTube account years ago, has come to the rescue once again, via the vid up top.

I noticed right before watching "Key Largo" for the millionth time on Turner Classic Movies on Saturday night that liberal economist and N.Y. Times columnist Paul Krugman mentioned in a new post that he has officially and finally fallen for Klara and Johanna, finally "gets" them, after hearing their cover of Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot "at the 2011 Polar Music Prize award telecast honoring her and Kronos Quartet.

Here's another video of them performing "Emmylou" LIVE in Nashville that I'd meant to post here before I left for Stockholm in January.
It was done for MTV USA's The Big and Best of 2012. Uploaded December 12, 2012

"It's what's in the grooves that counts" - David Ruffin - "Walk Away From Love" -only one of my favorite 10 songs ever; ABBA - "S.O.S."; Ruffin's version of "I Want You Back"

sevensman YouTube Channel: David Ruffin - "Walk Away From Love" on "Soul Train" with Don Cornelius. (1975) Uploaded July 20, 2010. http://youtu.be/APlXHfhbiVw

Truly, a perfect three-minute song.
So much immense talent, so much towering ego, so many inner demons...  and that crazy amazing emotive voice that never failed to get your attention.
That June day in 1991 that I heard on the radio that David Ruffin had died, I actually cried.

As for the video at the top of this post, I remember the Saturday morning that I first saw him performing this song on Soul Train in 1975, when I was fourteen-years old.
That was back when the show aired in South Florida on the then-independent Channel 6, WCIX-TV, down on Brickell Avenue, back when, pre-Radio Mambi, WAQI, that street also was the home of Storer Broadcasting's WGBS-AM 710, the then-number one sports radio station in South Florida, with its 50,000 Watts booming from that beautiful brick building on the corner known as the 710 Building.

As ridiculous as some of Soul Train's conventions could sometimes be, especially its not always so well-disguised lip-syncing, I watched that show religiously every Saturday morning.
Some posts on Miami TV and Radio of that era will be forthcoming in the new year

Below, David Ruffin as he appeared and sang the song on ABC-TV's American Bandstand with Dick Clark on the November 16, 1975 telecast:

Also appearing on that show - a band from Sweden that you may've heard of.
ABBA did a killer version of "S.O.S" as you can see from Shay's video.

35 years ago today, THE definitive visual look of ABBA's Dancing Queen

2Shaymcn YouTube Channel: ABBA - Dancing Queen (HQ) - LIVE at the Royal Swedish Opera, Stockholm, June 18, 1976. http://youtu.be/qk_Vu6AcbWg

Above, in my humble opinion, the single best version of this song ever recorded on film.

Thirty-five ago today, one of the most popular songs of the late 20th-Century got the definitive visual look it needed to go supernova, and there it stays, frozen in our collective memories.
Well, at least among those of us with a yen for genius lyrics and power-pop harmonies.

The day before the 1976 Royal Wedding in Stockholm of King Carl XVI Gustaf and his fiancee, commoner Silvia Sommerlath, the present Queen Silvia, during a variety program celebrating the nuptials, ABBA performed a never-to-be forgotten costumed version of Dancing Queen at the Royal Swedish Opera for them and their invited guests.

As you watch the video, you can see the almost bewildered look of many of the officials and other musicians seated behind them on the stage, who, the story goes, because of their unfamiliarity with the song, had no genuine idea whether or not the song was supposed to be about the future queen -or not.

And yes, it does remind all of us again of the group's marketing genius, since two years prior, at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton that made them famous, they wore early 19th-Century costumes when they performed Waterloo, which earned them first place.

ABBAVevo: ABBA -Dancing Queen (1976)

As of today this video has received 9,355,415 views.
The current population estimate of Sweden by the CIA is 9,088,728.

Benny sliding his fingers across the piano keys at the beginning -so very, very simple and yet so genius!

Fox-TV's multi-national hit Glee featured a performance of Dancing Queen in their May 10th episode titled Prom Queen, with Amber Riley and Naya Rivera doing the duet.

You can watch the entire episode on Fox's website until this coming Thursday at
The song begins at 0:40:46 and goes to 0:42:39.

Newest incarnation of 'When Fashion Meets Finance' now offers patina of high-mindedness -former wannabe-philanderers are now do-gooder philanthropists

Groovy! Newest incarnation of Fashion meets Finance now offers patina of high-mindedness -former wannabe-philanderers are now do-gooder philanthropists.

Conspicuous consumption has now morphed into charity work.
Now THAT'S how you successfully re-boot!

NOT that this would ever work in Miami!

This video reminds me a lot of the low-seat bar area at the W Hotel in San Francisco, circa 2000. There were, literally, SO many attractive women crammed into the place that it was actually disconcerting, but not for me and my former housemate from Arlington County, who was now living out there, but for the new women arriving into the area, as they took one look around at how crowded it was with over-the-top beauty and just fled, perhaps in terror.
Jamie and I just watched in disbelieving amazement!

In these new photos from the W website, it doesn't look the same as it did, which is a real pity:

In actuality, this event took place at

As I note there, my music teacher in high school, at North Miami Beach Senior High, was one of the top studio musicians in the country, and regularly performed at Criteria Studios in nearby North Miami for all the top groups of the time when they came to South Florida to lay down some tracks, or, record an entire album, and that even included ABBA.

In fact, he was part of the album title song recorded at Criteria the month of my 18th birthday, for which this video was later recorded, and if I recall correctly, was to be part of the touring band as well.
